List of metaphors in the English language┬аorganized by type. A metaphor┬аis a literary figure of speech┬аthat uses an image, story, or tangible┬аthing to represent a less tangible thing or some intangible quality or idea e.g., "Her eyes were glistening jewels". The metaphor may also be used for any rhetorical figures of speech┬аthat achieve their effects via association, comparison or resemblance.
In this broader sense, antithesis, hyperbole, metonymy,┬аand simile┬аwould all be considered types of metaphor. Aristotle┬аused both this sense and the regular, current sense above.
┬а
A metaphor (from the Latin metaphor) takes an object or action and compares it to something blindingly familiar, but completed unrelated.
The comparison in a metaphor is always non-literal, which makes it weirdly illogical. And yet, its meaning is (usually) abundantly clear.
┬а
A metaphor┬аstates that one thing is┬аanother thing, It equates those two things not because they actually are the same, but for the sake of comparison or symbolism, If you take a metaphor┬аliterally, it will probably sound very strange (are there actually any sheep, black or otherwise, in your family?), Metaphors┬аare used in poetry, literature, and anytime someone wants to add some color to their language.
