Сюжет сказки был позаимствован В. Гаршиным у французского баснописца Лафонтена. Но в его произведении вместо лягушки в путешествие отправляется черепаха, вместо уток её несут лебеди и, выпустив прутик, она падает и разбивается насмерть. Гаршин был добрее к своей героине и финал сказки получился не столь трагичным.
