슈테판 츠바이크(Stefan Zweig, 1881~1942) 소설가인 동시에 언론인, 전기 작가였다. 유럽의 3대 전기 작가 중 하나 다. 발자크, 디킨스, 도스토옙스키에 대한 에세이 ＜세 거장＞과 유명 작 가들에 대한 평전인 ≪악마와의 투쟁≫ ≪로맹 롤랑≫이 그의 대표 전기 다. 1934년 나치를 피해 브라질로 망명한다. 유럽이 자멸하는 것을 지켜 보며 우울증을 얻은 그는 1942년 “자유의지와 맑은 정신으로” 먼저 세 상을 떠난다는 유서를 남기고 스스로 생을 마감했다.
