Of the Essays in this volume âAdventures among Books,â and âRabâs Friend,â appeared in Scribnerâs Magazine; and âRecollections of Robert Louis Stevensonâ (to the best of the authorâs memory) in The North American Review. The Essay on âSmollettâ was in the Anglo-Saxon, which has ceased to appear; and the shorter papers, such as âThe Confessions of Saint Augustine,â in a periodical styled Wit and Wisdom. For âThe Poems of William Morrisâ the author has to thank the Editor of Longmanâs Magazine; for âThe Boy,â and âMrs. Radcliffeâs Novels,â the Proprietors of The Cornhill Magazine; for âEnchanted Cigarettes,â and possibly for âThe Supernatural in Fiction,â the Proprietors of The Idler. The portrait, after Sir William Richmond, R.A., was done about the time when most of the Essays were writtenâand that was not yesterday....FROM THE BOOKS.
