The first part of the book and the first chapter is about providing cover for your people. Since people within a team push hard and take risks, one of the most important things a leader needs to do is to provide cover for them.
The truth is that the world is filled with all kinds of dangers. Because of that, the very first thing a leader should do is to create something the author calls a Circle of Safety. This Circle of Safety should then be expanded as time passes.
After the short intro, the author explains four main chemicals that human bodies automatically generate. Each of these chemicals is then explained so that the readers know what each of them does to a human body. The first is Endorphins. These chemicals make us feel good when we work out and when we push hard. The second is Dopamine. Dopamine generates a sense of accomplishment when we do certain things. Serotonin gives us a sense of pride when other people admire and love what we do. Oxytocin gives us a feeling of friendship, love, and deep trust.
The thing with our bodies is that it is natural for them to crave endorphins and dopamine. These two hormones motivate us to do something.
