About this audiobook

Brought to you by Penguin.

The global bestseller - Origin is the latest Robert Langdon novel from the author of The Da Vinci Code.

Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, arrives at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend the unveiling of an astonishing scientific breakthrough. The evening's host is billionaire Edmond Kirsch, a futurist whose dazzling high-tech inventions and audacious predictions have made him a controversial figure around the world.

But Langdon and several hundred guests are left reeling when the meticulously orchestrated evening is suddenly blown apart. There is a real danger that Kirsch's precious discovery may be lost in the ensuing chaos. With his life under threat, Langdon is forced into a desperate bid to escape Bilbao, taking with him the museum's director, Ambra Vidal. Together they flee to Barcelona on a perilous quest to locate a cryptic password that will unlock Kirsch's secret.
To evade a devious enemy who is one step ahead of them at every turn, Langdon and Vidal must navigate the labyrinthine passageways of extreme religion and hidden history. On a trail marked only by enigmatic symbols and elusive modern art, Langdon and Vidal will come face-to-face with a breathtaking truth that has remained buried - until now.

Unrealistic and dull people go on a dull and unrealistic tour around Spain engaging in dull monologues and unrealistic conversations. No real mysteries or codes or symbology you speak of and the scientific elements are poorly explained without proper examination. Feels rather like the author read an online article about the subject matter and tried to stretch it or into a thriller, and failed. No thrills to be found here. You'd be better off reading the original articles and learning something about the scientific theory and/or reading some lonely planet guides to Barcelona. Narration was excellent though.

I will start by saying, I was entertained. I wanted to know how it turned out, although the actual 'mystery' was foreshadowed by Brown in every detail. He foreshadows like a Star Wars film, doesn't he? Yes, the hero is an infallible middle-aged white man who manages to attract Spain's most beautiful and accomplished woman, outwitting her in every intellectual sphere including her own. He literally and metaphorically 'ushers' the woman through the entire story. Sigh. Lots to overlook. Oddly, the harder thing to forgive is Brown's audacious decision to try to teach us about science. His protracted monologues on these subjects are so laboured that I was able to simultaneously listen to them and Google search the scientific laws and theories, getting a better grasp of their true meaning than the book displayed, using half my concentration. And I have really no prior knowledge of these subjects. I imagine it would be excruciating for anybody with actual expertise. Still, dumb is sometimes fun, and this was.

Typical Dan Brown. Something that will change the world and yet, you know, it will be snatched from him just right at the end. Usual disappointing in end. Buy something less predictable.
