4.5 stars — I am struggling with writing this review. I think I’m already sad it’s done. But also relieved that I loved the ending so much. I was honestly a bit worried that I wasn’t going to get all the answers I wanted, but I think I did. There might be a few little mysteries here and there, but in general I felt like it all wrapped up super well. I was worried for a bit that Robin was taking two steps back with Zylas, and I was a bit frustrated with her. But she had a reckoning with herself in the middle of this book, and it kind of papered over my frustrations with her. I was proud of how much she’d grown over the series, and who she was by the end of it. Zylas is still a little bit of a mystery for me, but I truly do love that demon boy. The slow burn finally paid off, and it was worth the wait. As with all these GCU books, there were a lot of intense scenes where I wasn’t sure how they were going to survive. I love all the little advances we see from them, the new things we learn, the new things they learn about themselves as they figure out how to not die. Even though the secondary cast isn’t quite as large as in Spellbound, I still really loved the ones who play a prominent role in this one. Amalia had a really tough go of it, but in the end I think she figured things out. And I loved that we got more Zora. I will admit that I kept waiting for Teddy Hamilton’s narration — so for anyone else that likes to know, it’s one chapter near the end…it’s not really dual narration. Cris Dukehart was amazing as always, even if she doesn’t know how to pronounce touque (it rhymes with Luke). I can already feel a book hangover coming on…but more like a universe hangover. I can tell that this is going to be a frequent reread for me, they’re like comfort books.
