Ein Fremder kommt in die Stadt San Rocco. Er erhält die Stelle des Totengräbers. Die Tochter des Stadthalters, Gita, begleitet ihn in sein neues Haus. Auch besucht sie ihn täglich. Der Fremde erzählt er täglich neue Geschichten...Doch dann kommt die Pest und viele Leichen. Gita darf nicht mehr kommen. Doch eines Tages kommt Gita und warnt den Fremden vor den anderen, die in ihm die Ursache für den "Tod in der Stadt" sieht. Doch durch einen unglücklichen Unfall kommt Gita zu Tode.
