About this audiobook

If Bridgerton and Pirates of the Caribbean had a love child.

As the first full-length novel in The White Sails Series, DISCERNING GRACE captures the spirit of an independent woman whose feminine lens blows the ordered patriarchal decks of a 19th century tall ship to smithereens.

Wilful Grace Baxter, will not marry old Lord Silverton with his salivary incontinence and dead-mouse stink. Discovering she is a pawn in an arrangement between slobbery Silverton and her calculating father, Grace is devastated when Silverton reveals his true callous nature.

Refusing this fate, Grace resolves to stow away. Heading to the docks, disguised as a lad to ease her escape, she encounters smooth-talking naval recruiter, Gilly, who lures her aboard HMS Discerning with promises of freedom and exploration in South America.

When Grace's big mouth lands her bare-bottomed over a cannon for insubordination, her identity is exposed. The captain wants her back in London but his orders, to chart the icy archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, forbid it. Lieutenant Seamus Fitzwilliam gallantly offers to take Grace off the fretting captain's hands by placing her under his protection.

Grace must now win over the crew she betrayed with her secret, while managing her feelings towards her taciturn protector, whose obstinate chivalry stifles her new-found independence. But when Grace disregards Lieutenant Fitzwilliam's warnings about the dangers of the unexplored archipelago, it costs a friend his life and she realises she is not as free as she believes.

Discerning Grace - I listened to the audiobook first, then read the book. I found both interesting, intriguing and immersing. It has been decades since I read a book of this genre that had proper language and almost proper actions for the time period and setting. Grace was a bit too modern with her thoughts and actions, and spot on with her poor decisions at times. I enjoyed the fact that the focus was actually on her learning her ship duties and pulling her ... See BookBub for rest of my review

Grace our spunky heroine discovers that her father has promised her to a most undesirable older man and decides the only way to escape her fate is to flee. So she does dressed as a boy and her journey begins... the journey will involve betrayal, adventure, danger, kidnapping and romance. The storyline was well written and feels as it it transports you right into the story. The heroine's character is strong and draws you right in. I recommend this read/audible it hits all the right buttons. I was gifted this audible as an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.

A great historical romance with a lot of action and humor tangled in the mystery thread. I laughed out as Grace's feminine gestures would escape when hiding as a lad. It made me think of princess Mullan but on a ship. I was sad at a much-devasted loss that could have been avoided if she wasn't so strong-willed. The ending will definitely leave you hooked for book 2.
