Giới thiệu về sách nói này

'Everything aboard this spaceship is suddenly endangered!' The TARDIS materialises in a tropical forest, and the Doctor, Steven and Dodo are surprised to find that it’s situated inside a vast spaceship. This is the distant future, and the last survivors from Earth are on a 700 year voyage to the planet Refusis II. Accompanying them are their mute, one-eyed servants: the Monoids. When Dodo unwittingly spreads her cold amongst the Monoids it proves deadly to them, and the travellers are accused of sabotage. Then the TARDIS jumps forward in time to the Ark’s future, where the Doctor and his friends make a horrifying discovery. The balance of power has shifted, and humanity is now enslaved by the vengeful Monoid race, who plan to make Refusis II their own... In an additional bonus interview, Peter Purves, who also provides linking narration for the story, recalls the making of the original 1966 television serial.

Giới thiệu tác giả

THE PROGRAMME: The Ark opens with the first journey through time and space for Dorothea 'Dodo' Chaplet, the latest addition to the crew of the TARDIS, who had wandered into the ship at the end of the previous story, The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve. The serial was commissioned from writer Paul Erickson in September 1965, and was an attempt by producer John Wiles to develop a Doctor Who adventure which incorporated some large-scale science-fiction concepts, such as the end of the world in the far future and the mass evacuation of the human race on an almost unimaginable journey. The scripts were delivered by November, and in January 1966 Erickson's agent asked for the writing credit to be shared between their client and Erickson's wife, Lesley Scott. According to Erickson in later years, his spouse had no involvement with the writing of the story and he retained sole copyright. Pre-filming for the serial took place from 24 January to around 4 February at the BBC Television Film Studios in Ealing. As well as various model inserts of the Ark, or effects such as the miniaturisation of a Guardian, the main film effort was devoted to set pieces on the studio landscapes representing the dense jungle aboard the Ark, or the equally lush surface of Refusis II. For work on 3 February, director Michael Imison secured the use of various pieces of Earth wildlife, including a baby Indian elephant called Monica who appeared in publicity shots with the show's stars, William Hartnell, Peter Purves and newcomer Jackie Lane. The majority of the serial was recorded in Studio 1 at the BBC's Riverside Studios. Each edition was rehearsed for a week prior to recording (from 8.30pm on Fridays from 18 February). With transmission running just three weeks behind recording, the final episode was recorded six days after the first had aired on BBC1. The final instalment was notable because it was the first time that an episode had been taped largely out of sequence, to minimise the movement of the large launcher prop between sets. Rather than commit money to specially composed incidental music, Michael Imison instead drew upon previously available cues from various sources. Most items came from the electronic music composed by Tristram Cary for the original 1963 Dalek serial; this is available on the BBC Music CD Doctor Who: Devil's Planets (WMSF-6072-2). The Monoid funeral in the second episode also used Robert Farrion's Drumdramatics No. 11 from the Chapell music library. Retained by the BBC as film recordings, The Ark was released on VHS videotape by BBC Worldwide in October 1998 (BBCV6609). With their adventures on Refusis behind them, the TARDIS crew find themselves under attack from an unseen assailant. The scene is set for the Doctor to face a new opponent in the next serial, The Celestial Toymaker... Programme notes compiled by Andrew Pixley.
