About this audiobook

“Tom Clancy fans open to a strong female lead will clamor for more.” – Publisher’s Weekly

The lead NTSB air-crash investigator—trapped between a stealth drone and a hard crash.

A US Air Force C-130 transport plane, bearing top-secret cargo, lies shattered in the Nevada desert at Area 51’s Groom Lake. China’s prototype fifth-generation jet fighter goes missing. Far above, a stealth drone flies a very lethal, and very covert Black Op. The CIA, the US military command, and the secretive National Reconnaissance Office are all locked in a political battle for control of the nation’s future.

Miranda Chase, the NTSB’s autistic air-crash genius, lands in the center of the gathering maelstrom. Burdened with a new team and a unique personality, she must connect the pieces to stay alive. And she must do it before the wreckage of her past crashes down upon her and destroys US-China relations forever.

Drone: Not a romance I have to admit that, after reading the Prologue, I wasn’t quite sure about this book. It was a significant departure in tone & language from Mr Buchman’s previous books (I’ve read them all apart from a few short stories, Monk's Maze & the Deities Anonymous series) and frankly, I found elements of it a bit distasteful. Obviously, this was scene setting for a character & environment the reader wasn’t supposed to warm to (that worked!) and immediately informing us that we’re not in Night Stalker-land any more. I read a lot, across many genres, including those often categorised as ‘men’s adventure series’ (sorry, guys, you don’t get to keep the good ones to yourselves) so I’m not sure exactly what affected me so much with this but I continued to read somewhat guardedly for approximately the first quarter of the book. So, on to the pros: Drone introduces us to an entirely new and fascinatingly diverse cast of characters set in the new (to me) environment of aircraft investigation. Included are a bit of cloak & dagger political- military manoeuvring, some suspense, puzzle-solving detective work, highly technical explanations neatly underpinning the storyline without overwhelming it and enough teasers about our expertly drawn lead & supporting characters to make us come back for more. Matt Buchman always impresses me with his technical knowledge/research regardless of the story’s setting - I always feel I’ve learnt something that I didn’t know before (including new vocabulary) - and yet he doesn’t let that overwhelm the story; or more importantly, the characters. For me, every book succeeds or fails based on how engaged I am with the characters, because otherwise it’s just a textbook. In Miranda, Holly, Mike & Jeremy, ML has introduced us to an intriguing bunch with potential for many enthralling adventures. Buchman warns us up-front that this is not a romance; whilst not a deterrent for me, I suspect this series, at the risk of sounding sexist, may appeal to a more male-orientated audience. In conclusion, I may have started Chapter 1 a little warily, but I finished Drone eagerly anticipating the next book. Thankfully, I don’t have long to wait, with Thunderbolt due in December and Condor in February. I can assure you I’ll be getting my hands on them as soon as I possibly can! *I received a free copy of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review."
