But as their relationships develops and alters, and as they have children and become increasingly dependent financially on Winifred's father, the cracks in their relationship become ever deeper.
An accident involving their eldest daughter compounds the problem...and then when war breaks out and Egbert becomes a soldier, things change for ever.
