This cryptic message was clearly meant for Father Oโ Malley. The unemotional voice on the answering machine was speaking of revenge against old enemies, and wanted OโMalley to visit the site of the 1874 Bates Battle where Captain Bateโs cavalry, lead by Shoshone warriors massacred nearly everyone living on an Arapaho tribal grounds. Now, someone has left three dead Shoshones on the battlefield, positioned to mimic the bodies of those Arapahos killed in the historic slaughter. Frankie Montana, attorney Vicky Holdenโs latest client, is a frequent guest of the reservationโs holding cells, and after a recent heated encounter with the three dead men, is the number one suspect in their deaths. Despite his faults, Vicky doesnโt believe he is capable of murder. Margaret Coel was born in Colorado in 1937. She attended Marquette University and was a historian before becoming a full-time writer. She is best known for her Wind River series featuring Jesuit priest Father John O'Malley and Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden. She won the Colorado Book Award for the novels Eye of the Wolf, The Spirit Woman, The Shadow Dancer, and Wife of Moon. The Spirit Woman also received the Willa Cather Award for best novel of the West. She is also the author of several non-fiction works including the award-winning Chief Left Hand. Her articles on the West have appeared in numerous publications including the New York Times and the Christian Science Monitor.
