Finn, a retired researcher, attempts to find an archaic preserve in the outback of Australia. He stays in the present, however, and encounters an Indigenous person who's following dreaming tracks. The two are captured by an outlaw group, who fight for Indigenous rights, and Finn finds himself becoming their leader. Facing the military, Finn and the group must somehow survive despite overwhelming odds. Help comes in the form of a dreaming animal, a marsupial mole. The reader is invited to enjoy this adventure in which the spirited small become the future.
The author has taught a college course on the symbolism of Indigenous cultures, which includes lectures on aboriginal people of Australia. He also has a love of animals and in his study of biology has reflected upon what makes their essence. Perhaps this has helped him to portray the marsupial mole, the dreaming animal for this story.
