About this audiobook

Set in a wonderfully reimagined 15th century West Africa, Masquerade is a dazzling, lyrical tale exploring the true cost of one woman’s fight for freedom and self-discovery, and the lengths she’ll go to secure her future.

“[Ariel] Blake is adept at describing romantic moments, sumptuous palace finery, and bloody battles. Her characters have depth and personalities, and speakers are easily identified. Òdòdó is an original character, and Blake invests her with gravitas and dignity.”—LitHub

“A bewitching, thrilling and vibrant novel that had me enthralled with every twist and turn.” —Jennifer Saint, New York Times bestselling author

"This splendid romantic adventure, loosely based on the Persephone myth, receives a sterling performance by Ariel Blake" AudioFile

Òdòdó’s hometown of Timbuktu has been conquered by the warrior king of Yorùbáland, and living conditions for the women in her blacksmith guild, who were already shunned as social pariahs, grow even worse.

Then Òdòdó is abducted. She is whisked across the Sahara to the capital city of Ṣàngótẹ̀, where she is shocked to discover that her kidnapper is none other than the vagrant who had visited her guild just days prior. But now that he is swathed in riches rather than rags, Òdòdó realizes he is not a vagrant at all; he is the warrior king, and he has chosen her to be his wife.

In a sudden change of fortune, Òdòdó soars to the very heights of society. But after a lifetime of subjugation, she finds the power that saturates this world of battle and political savvy too enticing to resist. As tensions with rival states grow, revealing elaborate schemes and enemies hidden in plain sight, Òdòdó must defy the cruel king she has been forced to wed by reforging the shaky loyalties of the court in her favor, or risk losing everything—including her life.

Loosely based on the myth of Persephone, O.O. Sangoyomi’s Masquerade takes you on a journey of epic power struggles and political intrigue which turn an entire region on its head.

Rambling book thoughts… First, I had to adjust my expectations. Masquerade had been marketed as a fantasy retelling of the Hades-Persephone myth. The story isn’t fantasy, not at all. The retelling is loosely based on the myth, but you probably wouldn’t realize it if you weren’t told. Expect more straight historical fiction with this book. Pacing is slow, and it takes quite some time to get where we’re going. But the writing is beautiful and immersive. Obodo is a strong female lead, fierce and independent, except she also does some questionable things that made me want to smack her. Then again, this all happened in the 15th century, so who am I to judge? Something—I’m not quite sure what—kept me from emotionally connecting with this story. I had moments when I was captivated, followed by stretches when it was just a story being told to me. Ariel Blake does a fantastic job with the narration. *I received a free audiobook download from the publisher.*

For someone who never really reads any books centered around politics, this book was amazing. I knew nothing of Persephone when I started the book, and I’m glad for the element of surprise that was there the whole time. There are a lot of characters, but they’re so completely different, and occupy the entire space when on the page, you can’t forget any of them. The setting of 15th century Western Africa was easy to picture with O.O.’s description, vivid and detailed, yet never drawn out.

Òdòdó has been kidnapped by a warrior king, who has chosen her to be his bride. What we get from there is a beautifully written story about Òdòdó’s journey from subjugation to finding her own power. I loved seeing Òdòdó learn how to win battles both political and physical, and I really loved how the story progressed, and that climactic ending was just perfect for her arc. You can definitely see the connections to the story of Hades & Persephone, but O.O. Sangoyomi has done a fabulous job making this story its own. (I would also like to point out that the romance in this book is definitely not the main driver of the story, and I would definitely not describe this book as a “romance” book.) I also felt she did a really great job transporting the reader to 15th Century West Africa; the setting really jumped off the page for me. I was sucked in from the start by the writing and narration. This is this author’s debut, and I’m so excited to where she goes from here. As for the narration, Ariel Blake was just fantastic, and really added to the immersive experience of the writing, and brought the characters to life. Thank you to @macmillan.audio for providing me an ALC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
