The story was good. It is about a family learning about their elderly mother after she goes missing in Seoul. I think something is lost in the translation. It is told from the perspective of different family members, but it is kind of jarring the way the narrator puts the reader (listener) in the place of the character. I have no doubt that it makes perfect sense in Korean, but when directly translated to english, its a bit confusing. You will come away with an appreciation for your mom though.
About the author
Kyung-sook Shin is the author of numerous works of fiction and is one of South Korea’s most widely read and acclaimed novelists. She has been honored with the Manhae Literature Prize, the Dong-in Literature Prize, and the Yi Sang Literary Prize, as well as France’s Prix de l’Inaperçu. Please Look After Mom is her first book to appear in English and will be published in nineteen countries. Currently a visiting scholar at Columbia University in New York City, she lives in Seoul.
