The shrill sound of the recess bell rang out across the playground at Parkville Elementary School. Kids burst through the doors, shoving and racing to get outside first for their precious twenty minutes of freedom.
Timmy Allen was one of the last ones out, dragging his feet as he stepped onto the faded blacktop. He hated recess. The other kids always picked him last for kickball or made fun of his secondhand clothes. Timmy found a quiet spot under the old oak tree and slumped down, already counting the minutes until the bell would mercifully ring again.
That's when he saw them. A group of kids around his age, dressed in old-fashioned clothes - knickers, vests, bonnets. They were playing some kind of clapping game, singing a rhyme Timmy didn't recognize. One of the girls looked straight at him and waved.
Timmy's heart jumped into his throat. He blinked hard, but the strange children were still there. An icy chill crept down his spine.
"Hey! Who are you kids?" he called out, his voice shaking.
The old-fashioned kids didn't answer. They just kept on with their rhyming game, their voices an eerie chorus.
"Timmy! Get over here, we need one more for the kickball team!"
