Perched on a mountain in a land of ancient forests is a village, rife with secrets. Cut off from the outside world it is run by the elders, men to whom tradition is all.

Edith lives alone with her alcoholic father who is forcing her to marry the village butcher. But she is in love with a shepherd who promised to return to her.

As the village becomes isolated in a sea of snow, Edith loses her power of speech. And it is this enchantment that will have far-reaching consequences, not only for Edith but for the whole village.

What a truly glorious treat! Sally Gardner has written a spectacular novel, beautifully narrated by Amanda Bright, a story about women imprisoned by men using outdated traditions to 'keep them in their place'. Edith lives in a small village in the mountains which is run by the elders who, in turn are run by the butcher. The butcher is supposedly less important than the mayor, but the butcher has made it his business to find out everybody's secrets and also loans money to those in need...not altruism you understand, just another way of controlling people. This story is a beautiful love story, a tale of vanquishing evil, righting wrongs and releasing women from domestic slavery.I loved it from start to finish, in fact I listened to it in one sitting. It's a perfect listen for a late autumn afternoon, with typical British weather outside and lockdown #2 in progress. Very highly recommended.
