Part novel, part philosophical treatise, part satire, Sartor Resartus is a masterpiece of 19th-century literature, following in the footsteps of Swiftâs Tale of a Tub and Sterneâs Tristram Shandy and a key influence on Melvilleâs Moby-Dick. Bubbling over with ideas, humour and inventiveness, it is â on the surface â a long-suffering British editorâs sceptical account of a German philosopherâs book, Clothes: Their Origin and Influence, which itself is steeped in German idealism. The author, Diogenes TeufelsdrÃļckh (âgod-born devil-dungâ), is Carlyleâs creation for exploring and expressing wider truths, which emerge through metaphor, comedic commentary, and quite dazzling prose â a novel simply to experience as much as to reflect upon.

Leighton Pugh trained at LAMDA, after studying Modern Languages at Queenâs College, Oxford. Radio work includes the plays Murder by the Book and Scenes from Provincial Life for BBC Radio 4 and the voice of Heinrich von Kleist in the BBC Radio 3 documentary The Tragical Adventure of Heinrich von Kleist. Leighton has been in five productions for the National Theatre, most recently The Lehman Trilogy (NT Live 2018â19, New York, West End). For Naxos AudioBooks he has recorded, among other things, The Diary of Samuel Pepys, Zolaâs Germinal, Nana and LâAssommoir, and featured in Waltonâs The Compleat Angler.
