She’d spent the past three years building a voting rights group, a fundraising operation, and a team of aides and advisers to help her not-so-quietly make senior party officials aware that she was running for governor. #2 In Georgia, Democrats were in need of a new leader after years of demoralizing defeats. Stacey Abrams was known for her outspokenness and ability to energize Democrats, but she was also known as a behind-the-scenes operator who was skilled at picking apart Republican talking points. #3 Georgia had always been a one-party state dominated by Democrats, and this remained the case throughout most of the twentieth century. Black leaders who tried to influence the Democratic Party were often looked down upon. #4 Georgia was a prime example of how the Democrats’ armor could be pierced. In 1980, Carter easily won Georgia, but was shellacked in much of the rest of the country.
