But as the night deepened, the laughter died in his throat. The fog pressed against his windows, thick and impenetrable, blocking out the world.
In the heart of the fog, a whisper began to spread, a voice soft and seductive, calling to the townsfolk. "Come out, come out," it sang a siren's call that pulled at the edges of reason.
Cathy, a young woman with a bold heart, stepped out into the fog, drawn by the voice. "Who's there?" she called, her voice steady but her heart racing. The fog wrapped around her, cold and damp, as if it sought to embrace her.
"You shouldn't have come," a voice hissed near her ear, making her jump. It was Martha, her eyes wide with fear. "The fog, it's alive."
