The odds are stacked against Emma.

I loved this story so much. The world felt very real and it’s villains were so different but brilliantly done. The main character was very Katniss-like in her intentions, not necessarily aiming to change anything, but letting her moral code drive her. At times, the audio narration didn’t quite match up with the energy of the words, but it’s easily looked past. If you’re looking for an atmospheric read that almost feels like a classic fairytale, but with modern sensibilities, look no further.

I was gifted this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. I very rarely, if ever, read YA novels. I was surprised that this did not annoy me. The story, although mostly predictable, had good lessons weaved throughout, with an interesting mythical addition. I love a strong heroine, and, as with real life, found myself frustrated with cowardice of everyone. 3.5 rounded up, I think the author could have done more with the story. Did not care for the audiobook, she "uptalked" sooo much.
