The First Private

I'll start with what I like about this book: the narrator is phenomenal. Everything else about this story is a pitfall of bad writing decisions and unintentionally humorous plot. There are a few contunuity errors within the first two chapters even! The main character is absolutely unpleasant and I feel the story would have been more digestible were the protagonist one of the side characters instead. The setting reeks of the most common dystopian tropes that left me rolling my eyes with how ridiculous everyone acted within. The most oppressive thing about the very dated red-scare communist dystopia was having to listen to how annoying the main character was.

First impressions. This was an interesting narrative. A bit tropish at times but as a fan of dystopian sci-fi. This didn't disappoint. I'll update this review once I finish. I'm currently on Chapter 7.

Not usually a fan of military Sci-Fi but this is a well structured and interesting book. Audiobook was free so that helps. Will buy the follow up.
