Trist and his allies have defeated the daemon Adrammelech, and in the aftermath of the battle, the conflict between Narvonne and the Caliphate of Ma'in has been set aside. Now, Trist must become the sword of Narvonne's new king. More and more daemons are breaking their chains, and unless he can grow powerful enough to stand against them, his home village of Camaret-à-Arden will be destroyed—along with what is left of his family.
