About this audiobook

Brought to you by Penguin.

For over three thousand years, the Mediterranean Sea has been one of the great centres of civilization. David Abulafia's The Great Sea is the first complete history of the Mediterranean, from the erection of temples on Malta around 3500 BC to modern tourism. Ranging across time and the whole extraordinary space of the Mediterranean from Gibraltar to Jaffa, Genoa to Tunis, and bringing to life pilgrims, pirates, sultans and naval commanders, this is the story of the sea that has shaped much of world history.

This was a wonderful account of the story of the Mediterranean that I just wanted to keep listening to. Even better though, the author manages to deal with the accounts of the various religious groups, and different people groups in a very even handed way. There is no sense of 'good guys' or 'bad guys', just a telling of events. I also appreciated the way he shared his viewpoint alongside opposing viewpoints at times, alerting the reader to a view that may be contentious. He even managed to weave a little of his own story into the book. I will be looking for more of his books.
