Set in a richly detailed world inspired by ancient Arabia, Hafsah Faizal's We Hunt the Flame--first in the Sands of Arawiya series--is a gripping debut of discovery, conquering fear, and taking identity into your own hands.

People lived because she killed. People died because he lived.

Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the sultan. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways. Both Zafira and Nasir are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be.

War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the sultan on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine.

Finally a book I enjoyed! After reading the cruel prince i was losing hope. However, the ending felt a bit rushed, and the author lost their grip on the story a bit. Characters started making weird or nonsensical choices to push the story in a specific direction. It got a bit predictable. Even called it's self out a couple times like the author was aware. Sticking with 4 stars though because I loved the first 3/4 of it.

This book was so boring! I finished it because I felt obligated to after spending the money on it. The concept for the story was good, but the "bad boy" narrator whined and vacillated incessantly, at certain points deciding to be good and worthy of love, then inevitably deciding that he was too evil and bad for redemption. Even this struggle might have been interesting if the author had tried to show this playing out in his actions, but no. Instead it was one internal sad boy monologue after another. Also, the way that the multiple layers of the true identities of different characters were revealed at the end was annoying and overly convenient. I've listened to about 50 audiobooks in the last year, and this one was by far the worst.
