"Narrated by the author, this audio program feels like an evening with a good friend who doesn't shy away from awkward questions.... An urgent primer on race and racism, from the host of the viral hit video series
Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man”

“You cannot fix a problem you do not know you have.” So begins Emmanuel Acho in his essential guide to the truths Americans need to know to address the systemic racism that has recently electrified protests in all fifty states. “There is a fix,” Acho says. “But in order to access it, we’re going to have to have some uncomfortable conversations.”

In Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man, Acho takes on all the questions, large and small, insensitive and taboo, many white Americans are afraid to ask—yet which all Americans need the answers to, now more than ever. With the same open-hearted generosity that has made his video series a phenomenon, Acho explains the vital core of such fraught concepts as white privilege, cultural appropriation, and “reverse racism.” In his own words, he provides a space of compassion and understanding in a discussion that can lack both. He asks only for the listener’s curiosity—but along the way, he will galvanize all of us to join the antiracist fight.

Ever since the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police last summer, I (a white male) have been on a journey trying to learn more about the history of racism in America and to become less ignorant to the plights of our fellow black Americans. Of all the books that I've read on this topic, this one left me the most disappointed. Acho does have unique life experiences to share which is why I was first interested in reading it. Instead, he focuses on mainstream media news stories instead of personal experience. It just felt really inauthentic and I got the vibe that he was using this as a stepping stone to build his personal brand. I'm not saying he doesn't make good points, but everything he says could be shared by anyone, and I wish he used more personal experience. "Black Privilege" by Charlamagne Tha God and "6th Man" by Andre Iguodala were books I read before this one that really got me thinking. They focused on experience rather than narrative and left me more understanding.
