Время написания первой части предисловия, появившейся в первом издании «Дыма» в 1868 г. – июнь–октябрь 1867 г. – определяется письмами Тургенева той поры. 31 мая (12 июня) 1867 г. Тургенев сообщил А. Ф. Писемскому, что он только еще думает «о небольшом предисловии к отдельному изданию „Дыма”», а в ноябре 1867 г. это издание уже вышло в свет.
