12/24 марта Тургенев был избран почетным членом Общества петербургских художников, а 14/26 марта писателя официально пригласили на предстоящее чествование, и он дал согласие на нем присутствовать. Это и дает основание предполагать, что комментируемая речь была подготовлена Тургеневым для произнесения на обеде, устроенном петербургскими художниками. Однако неожиданная болезнь помешала Тургеневу присутствовать на этом обеде, и чествование состоялось без него.
