《寓言詩》是拉封丹窮畢生精力寫成的不朽之作，據學者研究，總數達12卷242篇的寓言詩乃是一個有機的整體，每一篇寓言詩都是一個不可缺少的構成部分。

寓言故事裡的主要角色約有12類，即男人、女人、神、鳥類、狼、狐狸、獅子、老鼠、驢、猴子和水生動物等，它們活動的主要地點也有12個左右，即森林、田野、懸崖、河流、大海、道路、城市街道、店鋪、宮殿、茅屋等。

這些寓言形成了一個由人和動物組成的世界，構成了以宇宙為背景、以人類為角色的「百幕大喜劇」，似乎可以說是巴爾扎克《人間喜劇》的雛形和先聲。

原著既為詩歌體裁，翻譯後仍有部分詩歌特質，可能與一般散文格式略有落差。
