從前在日本的鄉下里住著一對和藹可親的老夫婦。雖然他們努力工作，卻依然很窮，幾乎是三餐不繼。有一天，老婆婆便告訴老公公說：「老伴啊，眼看著明天就要過年了，可是看看我們家的米缸吧！只剩下那一點點糯米啦，這只夠做成一粒小飯糰罷了。再這樣下去，可怎麼辦纔好啊?」這時候老婆婆的臉上露出了憂愁與失望的表情，對於新年即將來到毫不快樂。
但老婆婆立刻又樂觀起來。她說：「老伴啊！雖然只有這些米，但我還是可以做出一粒好吃的飯糰呢！」
老公公聽了也覺得很開心。但就在他們談話的時候，在那屋角的老鼠洞砣，有一群小老鼠圍著老鼠媽媽哭鬧不停，因為他們的肚子實在餓得受不了，便吵著媽媽要東西吃。但是老鼠媽媽真的是一點兒法子也沒有，於是小老鼠們便「吱！吱！」的哭了起來。
