从前在日本的乡下里住着一对和蔼可亲的老夫妇。虽然他们努力工作，却依然很穷，几乎是三餐不继。有一天，老婆婆便告诉老公公说：「老伴啊，眼看着明天就要过年了，可是看看我们家的米缸吧！只剩下那一点点糯米啦，这只够做成一粒小饭团罢了。再这样下去，可怎么办才好啊?」这时候老婆婆的脸上露出了忧愁与失望的表情，对于新年即将来到毫不快乐。
但老婆婆立刻又乐观起来。她说：「老伴啊！虽然只有这些米，但我还是可以做出一粒好吃的饭团呢！」
老公公听了也觉得很开心。但就在他们谈话的时候，在那屋角的老鼠洞砣，有一群小老鼠围着老鼠妈妈哭闹不停，因为他们的肚子实在饿得受不了，便吵着妈妈要东西吃。但是老鼠妈妈真的是一点儿法子也没有，于是小老鼠们便「吱！吱！」的哭了起来。
