有別於早期唯心論船山學、唯物論船山學，以及近代理學式船山學與心學式船山學，本書選擇以兩端而一致之辯證思考來剖析船山學，確立其氣學之義理定位。兩端而一致之辯證思考源自船山易學乾坤並建之觀點，這樣的思考又開展出道器合一、理勢合一、理欲合一等重要內容，顯而易見，易學是船山學之核心，重中之重，理解船山絕不能繞開船山易學，所以本書欲透過對船山易學之建構，來體現船山學之特質與意義。
