本書作者研究了六個國家的復和司法發展狀況，探討了復和式司法制度在香港推行的前景、憂慮等問題。傳統的報復式司法制度(retributive justice)偏重於嚴懲，強調公義的彰顯等同於懲罰阻嚇，但這種制度往往忽視了讓年青犯事者更生、學習、重建自己的機會，因此近年不少國家都發展了一套復和式司法制度(restorative justice)，平衡犯事者及受害者的利益，鼓勵各方受影響者透過復和會議解決問題，使犯事者為自己的行為負責的同時，可向受害人表達悔意及修補傷害，減低重犯的機會。
