宜蘭頭城外海上的一座火山島嶼－龜山島，早於1874年時已有人居住的歷史紀錄。當時島上是個靠海為生的漁村社區，然而在1977年時因軍事需求而被強制遷村至臺灣本島宜蘭頭城大溪漁港附近的龜山島社區。現在的龜山島已無人居住。本書收錄的照片由基督教長老教會牧師薛培德（BarryL.Schuttler）於1959-1960年間拍攝，當時擔任臺灣基督教救濟會主任的他，隨著著救援物質發放，深入臺灣各地，包括龜山島。薛培德牧師拍下舢舨漁船運送物資，與龜山人領取的過程，更紀錄當時島內的建築和居民搬漁網、在罟寮休息等日常樣貌，透過他的影像讓我們一探當年龜山島漁村的生活風貌。
