About the author
레프 톨스토이는 1828년 러시아 남부 지방에 있는 야스나야 폴랴나에서 태어났습니다. 한때 법학을 공부했지만 포기하고 군인의 길을 걷기도 했던 톨스토이는 고향으로 돌아와 농민교육 사업에 관심을 기울입니다. 농민의 교육과 계몽을 목적으로 글을 쓴 톨스토이는 고통, 죽음, 인생의 허무함에 대해 늘 생각하며, 작품으로 표현했습니다. 1910년 집을 떠나 방랑길에 올랐지만 심한 폐렴에 걸려 작은 시골 기차역에서 숨을 거두고 맙니다.
