“벌써 봄이로군.” -백자안. 그는 실로 오랜만에 집으로 돌아가는 길이었다. 그곳은 그가 태어난 곳이지만 그러나 아버지의 고향은 아니다. 말하자면 그는 지금 아버지의 고향에서 자신의 집으로 돌아가고 있는 중이었다. 관외에서 중원으로 들어가는 길목에 해당되는 이곳은 비록 아직 잔설이 땅을 가득 뒤덮고 있기는 해도 오후의 햇살은 제법 따스했다. “이제 머지않아 저 눈들이 모두 녹고 이곳에는 다시 새로운 풀잎들이 돋아나겠지.” 그는 본래 시를 즐기는 편이 아니었고 게다가 술을 특히 좋아하는 주당도 아니었다. 하지만 지금은 그는 술을 즐기며 취흥에 젖어 시를 읊조리는 시선처럼 흉내를 내고 있었다. 술은 비록 조금 전에 주막에 들러서 산 값싼 죽엽청이요, 그 양도 얼마 되지 않는 것이지만, 그러나 그는 마치 그것을 음미하기라도 하듯이 조금씩 입 안에서 굴려 가며 마시고 있었다.
