저자 현진건은 대한제국과 일제 강점기 조선(朝鮮)의 작가, 소설가 겸 언론인, 독립 운동가이다.김동인(金東仁)·염상섭(廉想涉)과 더불어 근대문학 초기에 단편소설 양식을 개척하고 사실주의 문학의 기틀을 마련한 작가이다. 특히 식민지시대의 현실대응 문제를 단편기교와 더불어 탁월하게 양식화한 작가로서 문학사적 위치를 크게 차지하고 있다
