그는 지금 절벽을 돌아 내려와 자신이 손수 만들었던 그 무덤의 앞에 서 있다. 형식적인 작별의 대례 같은 것은 필요가 없을 것이다. 다만 너무도 초라해 보이는 무덤의 곳곳을 어루만지듯 손질해보다가 멍하니 생각에 잠기고, 그렇게 몇 번을 거듭하다가 그는 비로소 몸을 일으켰다. 앞으로 그에게 해야 할 일들이 있기 때문이다. 다시 돌아와서 본 면벽동의 내부는 여전히 황량하리만큼 단조로웠다. 눈에 띄는 것은 아무렇게나 깎아 만든 돌침상과 돌탁자, 그리고 빈 그릇들과 여벌의 수저들, 그리고 다 낡아 떨어진 옷가지 등이 전부였다. 그곳에 있는 것들 중 그의 물건이라고 할 수 있는 것은 하나도 없었다. 마치 지난 삼 년간의 세월을 다시 더듬어보기라도 하듯이 잠시 동안 가만히 그곳의 내부를 둘러보다가, 이윽고 그는 신형(身形)을 돌려 밖으로 향하기 시작했다. 화검상(華劍傷). 그는 이제 다시 세상(世上)에 나가게 되는 것이다.
