Nat Turner's rebellion soon followed, then ever-more violent congressional arguments over slavery and tarrifs. New technologies, meanwhile, were dramatically changing Americans' relationship with the land, and Andrew Jackson's harsh policies toward the Cherokee erased most Indians' last hopes of autonomy.
