Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) was a major Norwegian poet, iconoclast and as 'the father of modern drama' one of the most important playwrights of all time. His plays were deemed scandalous by many of his contemporaries during an era when Victorian values held sway and it was considered outrageous to challenge the status quo.
