writing a short history is always a compromise. but still, a decent survey.

Richard Dargie is Lecturer in Social Studies at the University of Edinburgh, where his research interests include history teacher training and history textbooks. His recent publications include Scotland in the Middle Ages, Medieval Scotland, and Living in a Roman Villa.
