Major Gabriel Prideaux returns to England to find his claim to the earldom as tenuous as ever, his brother in a lunatic asylum, and his oldest friend guarding the streets at night as the Covent Guard. At every turn, there is another catastrophe just waiting for Gabe, but being home after many years away, he finds that his thoughts keep returning to the one girl he’s always loved, especially when he stumbles upon her in a most surprising place and wearing pageboy attire.Miss Sophia Hampton has always been reckless, but no more so than when she sneaks into her cousin’s bachelor lodgings to beg for his help with their dictatorial grandfather. Another page turning, engrossing read. The events of this story take place at the same time as the events in Scandalous Ruse. Whilst this book could be read as a stand alone book to fully appreciate it I recommend reading the other books in the series. The author has built a very engaging, entertaining community of families whose exploits & interactions draw you in so that you are waiting with bated breathe for the next instalment. The characterisation is very good & my heart went out to Clayton even though his condition was in many ways self-inflicted. Gabe & Sophie are very likeable & their love has stood the test of time & distance, both are also very caring & family orientated. The pace is very good & is maintained throughout the book My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
