I can't say that I liked this book very much. It hardly seems like it was written by the same man as _The Ruins_. Although I suppose they were both books that basically consisted of one bad thing after another happening... I don't now. I thought that Smith did a good job of really getting into Hank's head, of justifying his motivations... but after what happened with Jacob, I just couldn't get reabsorbed into the story. It wasn't bad per se, but it certainly wasn't good! And the ending!!! Ach....

A warning to all those people out there with a soft heart towards anything demoralizing, this is more than enough to bring down a average persons spirits. But if you can enjoy some good writing to match a good story then this should be a satisfactory novel with many twists and turns.
