These changes have revolutionized, in a fundamental way, the subjectofpublic economics. Alsothesedevelopmentshavecalledintoquestiontheabil ityofgovernmentstocarryoutsomeofitstraditionaltasks, particularly the efficient design of redistribution and tax systems. The theoretical research in public economics has contributedtothedevelopmentofnew instrumentsand ap proaches to tackle problemsofeconomic policy in a more effectivemanner.
