About this ebook

In a dystopian California, a woman searches for her daughter with the help of an enigmatic outlaw in this “evocative, sensual, harrowing” zombie thriller (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Awakening in a bleak landscape, Cass Dollar vaguely recalls enduring something terrible. With no idea of how many days or weeks have passed, she slowly realizes the horrifying truth: her daughter, Ruthie, has vanished—along with civilization as we know it. Instead of winding through the once-lush hills, the roads today see only cannibalistic Beaters: people turned hungry for human flesh by a government experiment gone wrong.

In a broken, barren California, Cass will undergo a dangerous quest to get Ruthie back. Few people trust an outsider—much less one who bears the telltale scars of a Beater attack. But she finds safety with a mysterious stranger, Smoke. And she’ll need him more than ever when his ragged band of survivors learn that she and Ruthie have become the most feared, and desired, weapons in a brave new world . . .

One of the most disappointing books I've read in a long, long time. I pride myself on never leaving a book unfinished (DNF) but this story - if it can even be called that - has made me really rethink that attitude. So many words used to say so little. The only redeeming factor in this experience is my relief in that I didn't waste more money buying the trilogy to start. The writing is uneven and the characters barely developed. Even after 100 pages you have very little idea what is happening (or why) and even when an explanation is eventually forthcoming, you feel like it was just a random add-on ("oh, did we mention the war?"). The author chooses to go to unbelievable lengths in providing the most obtuse desciptions, often repeating aspects that have been provided before. The plot is uneven, the appearance of supporting characters seemingly random and unsatisfying at best and the finale is at best rushed. The book never even seems to settle on its own focus and I honestly think this was just a (bad) romance novel that for some reason was readjusted to include an apocalyptic scenario. Even at the sales price found at this site, I can not recommend this book to anyone.
