About this ebook

Welcome to The Sunbearer Trials, where teen semidioses compete in a series of challenges with the highest of stakes, in this electric new Mexican-inspired fantasy from Aiden Thomas, the New York Times bestselling author of Cemetery Boys.

“Only the most powerful and honorable semidioses get chosen. I’m just a Jade. I’m not a real hero.”

As each new decade begins, the Sun’s power must be replenished so that Sol can keep traveling along the sky and keep the chaotic Obsidian gods at bay. Sol selects ten of the most worthy semidioses to compete in the Sunbearer Trials. The winner carries light and life to all the temples of Reino del Sol, but the loser has the greatest honor of all—they will be sacrificed to Sol, their body melted down to refuel the Sun Stones, protecting the world for another ten years.

Teo, a seventeen-year-old Jade semidiós and the trans son of the goddess of birds, isn't worried about the Trials . . . at least, not for himself. His best friend, Niya is a Gold semidiós and a shoo-in for the Trials, and while he trusts her abilities, the odds of becoming the sacrifice is one-in-ten.

But then, for the first time in over a century, the impossible happens. Sol chooses not one, but two Jade competitors. Teo, and Xio, the thirteen-year-old child of the god of bad luck. Now they must compete in five trials against Gold opponents who are more powerful and better trained. Worst of all, Teo’s annoyingly handsome ex-best friend and famous semidiós Hero, Aurelio is favored to win. Teo is determined to get himself and his friends through the trials unscathed—for fame, glory, and their own survival.

First off, -1 star for the love interest having a man bun. Moving on... This book is set in one of those time periods that's really hard to grasp. Like Boruto. You got a magic world set in an ancient Aztec kingdom, but there's cellphones, Tajin, HRT, and top surgery. We're introduced to a huge number of gods that don't have any hard rules to their abilities, where disabilities, and bodies should be easily fixed and there isn't really a good explanation as to why characters are deaf or need HRT. The cast is cool and have unique personalities. There's only 10 characters in the games, but we don't really delve into anybody outside maybe 5 people. I don't even think we learn all their powers. They set up a way to learn everyone's weaknesses, but never use it. The main character FORGETS water is weak to fire. Someone seemingly falls to their death, when the main character has wings he can use, and then reappears out of nowhere next chapter. Sorry. I can't recommend this.

From the gorgeous cover alone, I couldn't wait to dive into this Mexican mythology inspired fantasy novel. As someone who knew nothing about these gods and goddesses, I was intrigued by how their stories would play out. I anticipated a high-stakes, action-packed, emotionally heart wrenching plot. However, what I encountered was not quite what I'd expected. At first, the number of characters thrown at me confused me, but as soon as the trials began, the number of involv

Going to start by saying I'm incredibly picky about the books I actually read, a lot of stories I find are so boring and predictable because they're all the same, and I gotta say that this book is absolutely AMAZING! The writing is very consistent, and easy to follow, the characters are honestly relatable, and the pace of the progression of the story is great in my opinion. 10/10, great book
