I lettori italiani sanno fare i loro conti, e conoscono bene la quantità di risate che Alan Bennett riesce a scatenare quando maneggia uno spunto anche elementare (la sgradita visita di topi d'appartamento, ad esempio), o ritrae personaggi familiari in situazioni incongrue (un'anziana regnante cui capita in mano, per la prima volta o quasi, un libro).
