A classic book authored by the foremost architectural historian in America, this fully illustrated history of American architecture and city planning is based on Vincent Scully's conviction that architecture and city planning are inseparably linked and must therefore be treated together. He defines architecture as a continuing dialogue between generations which creates an environment across time. Vincent Scully (1920-2017) was Sterling Professor Emeritus at Yale University. He was widely regarded as North America’s preeminent architectural historian. He is the author of numerous books, including ten seminal works in architectural and urban design history. Among his many awards are the National Medal of Arts and the Urban Land Institute’s J. C. Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development. The National Endowment for the Humanities chose Scully to deliver its prestigious Jefferson Lecture, and the National Building Museum has established the Vincent Scully Prize in Scully's honor.
