Baghdad, 1928. Death in a Desert Land is the third title in Andrew Wilson's excellent series where the sleuth is Agatha Christie herself! It’s 1928 and Agatha sets forth to far off Baghdad in order to solve a two year old mystery. The famous explorer and writer, Gertrude Bell had died of a drug overdose which the authorities put down to suicide. Now a letter from the victim herself has come to light in which she states that she is afraid that someone is trying to kill her, she goes on to say that if she is killed, the place to start the investigation would be Ur, the archaeological site in Mesopotamia. Agatha begins her investigations. As I said before, Andrew Wilson really writes a fine mystery story and he has the skill not just with plotting, but also with his use of language, to produce a novel well worthy of the Golden Age. There are several authors using famous writers as their detectives, but Andrew Wilson is streets ahead. Highly recommended.

Andrew Wilson is an award-winning journalist and author. His work has appeared in a wide variety of publications including the Guardian, the Washington Post, the Sunday Times, and the Smithsonian Magazine. He is the author of four acclaimed biographies, a book about the survivors of the Titanic, and the novels The Lying Tongue, A Talent for Murder, A Different Kind of Evil, and Death in a Desert Land.
